Fishing is an ideal fall activity for kids in Colorado, offering a perfect blend of outdoor adventure and education amid the state’s stunning autumn landscapes. As the temperatures cool and the leaves change, Colorado’s rivers, lakes, and reservoirs become serene settings for young anglers to learn and enjoy the sport. Fall is also a prime time for fishing, with many fish species more active and easier to catch as they prepare for winter. It’s a great way for kids to connect with nature, develop patience, and learn about local ecosystems, all while enjoying quality time with family in the crisp, fresh air.

Pike's Peak Fishing Derby for Kids

The second annual Youth Fishing Derby is scheduled for September 14 at Crystal Reservoir, located off the scenic Pikes Peak Highway. This family-friendly event, running from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., is free for kids ages 6-15 and their guardians. It's a perfect opportunity for young anglers to learn the basics of fishing while enjoying the beauty of Colorado’s outdoors. To ensure everyone has a chance to participate, the first 100 kids in need will be provided with fishing gear. The derby will kick off with quick lessons on essential fishing skills, including casting, knot-tying, baiting, and handling fish.

Organized by Pikes Peak-America's Mountain, a Colorado Springs city enterprise, the event builds on the success of last year’s inaugural derby, which saw 168 young participants. In addition to fishing, the derby aims to instill a love for the outdoors and promote conservation among the youth. Pikes Peak-America's Mountain Manager has emphasized the event’s dual focus on fun and education in a recent statement. The morning will conclude with awards and a free lunch, with no need for kids to have a state fishing license or for parents to worry about reserving or purchasing a Pikes Peak Highway ticket.
