Each winter, downtown Steamboat Springs comes alive as ice blocks arrive on the streets, signaling the approach of the much-anticipated Winter Carnival. These blocks patiently await transformation into stunning sculptures for the 112th annual event, which takes place from Wednesday to Sunday, February 5–9, 2025. This five-day celebration of winter magic features everything from horse-drawn skiers racing through town to a fiery torchlight descent from mid-mountain, creating a spectacle that’s uniquely Steamboat.

The Steamboat Winter Carnival

The Winter Carnival, founded by the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC), began as a way to combat cabin fever during the long Colorado winters. Since its establishment in 1914, the SSWSC has been a cornerstone of the community, fostering a love of skiing and snowboarding while producing world-class athletes. With programs tailored to all ages and abilities, the club embodies the spirit of Ski Town, U.S.A.®, and plays an integral role in preserving Steamboat’s rich winter sports legacy. Its athletes have gone on to represent Steamboat Springs on national and international stages, including the Winter Olympics. The club’s dedication to developing not just athletic prowess but also discipline and character ensures that participants leave with lifelong skills and a deep connection to their mountain community.

More than just an athletic organization, the SSWSC hosts cherished events like the Winter Carnival, which has captivated locals and visitors for over a century. Highlights include thrilling competitions, festive ski parades, and the spectacular Night Extravaganza, complete with fireworks and breathtaking performances by club members. The Winter Carnival exemplifies the SSWSC’s mission to blend top-tier athletic training with vibrant community engagement, inspiring generations to embrace winter sports and celebrate the unique culture of Steamboat Springs.
